Reverse the Ban Campaign

reverse the ban on Midsummer Common mooring posterReverse the Ban on Midsummer Common Mooring was a campaign launched by Camboaters in July 2004, in response to the Conservators of the River Cam's proposal to ban mooring for six months of the year on Midsummer Common, starting on 1 October 2004. This restriction was proposed under the guise of a 'navigational issue', to provide additional river width for novice University rowers in training, however, we felt that the process in which the problem was investigated and the subsequent revision of the policy, was flawed and took place far too quickly.

The stretch of river along Midsummer Common is home to large number of boaters and we felt that our community and way of life was under threat by such a ban. With insufficient alternative mooring available during the autumn and winter months, the ban would, in effect, be forcing the occupants of approximately 25 houseboats out of the area or making them homeless.

As a result of three months sustained campaigning and overwhelming public support, the Conservators took the decision, at a meeting on 23 September, to delay the ban until October 2005, in which time the City Council have promised to look into their mooring policy.
