[01/03/07] 2007 MOORING CHARGE INCREASE

Camboaters, the boating community on the River Cam in Cambridge, is extremely shocked regarding the City Council’s new Mooring Policy licence agreement. The Council is increasing their annual licence fee by over a massive 20%, a rise way above inflation. Students will now have to pay an increase of 60%. Considering full-time students are exempt from paying council tax, this is totally unacceptable. Camboaters have advised their members to return their application packs but enclosing payment only at a level equivalent to Council Tax band A.

The Council has repeatedly assured everyone that the licence fee would always be the equivalent of Council Tax Band A. This evidently is not the case and contravenes the agreement that was made last year.

With the paltry facilities and services the boating community currently receives, we desire to know what our fees are being spent on and what improvements are being scheduled for the coming year?

Camboaters demand that the council reduce the licence fee to the equivalent of Council Tax band A, as agreed last year. Re-instate the student discount to 50% of the licence fee, suspend the reapplication process while this dreadful mess is resolve and give applicants until 14th April to submit their mooring licence application forms.

Now that we are in this unenviable position, it is high time Cambridge City Council devise a system whereby they are held accountable, and compensate us in some way for their blunders and lack of achievement over the past year.
