[24/11/04] Children in Need Fundraiser

MEMBERS of CamBoaters – the recently formed community of boat-owners living on the river Cam – on Friday night raised over £350 for the charity
Children in Need.

The seven plucky boaters dressed as pirates and swarmed the decks of local groghouses on Friday 19th November to persuade punters to donate the price of that extra pint to Children in Need. Children in Need helps children and charities throughout the UK and this year have raised a total of over £17 million as part of their 25th Children in Need Appeal. All of the money raised by the boatie pirates on Friday has gone straight to the Appeal.

Drinkers at the Fort St. George, Radigund, King Street Run, Champion of the Thames, Hopbine, Zebra and the Bird in Hand proved the most generous of the night, giving a total of £352.

Camboater Amanda, already notorious from her bright purple narrowboat, caused hilarity in the Turkish restaurant Efes when her Hawaiian belly dance in a grass skirt provoked diners to throw money down her coconut cup top. As well as the fun and games, however, Camboaters are pleased with the serious side of the charity pub crawl. Alixandrea, from the narrowboat Helena, said “We are delighted by the amount of money we raised and want to thank everyone who donated on the night.”

The event follows on from a series of community-based events organised by members of Camboaters, including an Open Boats Day in August and a mass litter-pick ‘Great Cam Clean-Up’ in September. Camboaters are always keen to arrange and involve themselves in future charity and community events, so watch this space.
